We Feel Deep Sorrow for Families Lost in the Earthquake in Afghanistan

A Nation in Mourning | We Stand with Afghanistan

As  a UK-based Muslim Charity, we stand united in grief and compassion with our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan. We grieve deeply for the thousands of lives lost and the immense suffering caused by the catastrophic earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan on August 31, 2025, bringing sorrow and loss.

Growing Toll of Deaths

According to the recent reports from Reuters, it is confirmed that this tragic earthquake has claimed the lives of over 2,200 individuals, with 2,205 confirmed dead and more than 3,640 injured. Rescue efforts continue in the difficult mountainous regions of Kunar Province, where many villages have been devastated. "Everything we had has been destroyed," said Aalem Jan, whose house in the worst-affected province of Kunar was flattened by the tremors.

The Human Face of the Crisis

Families are left homeless, grieving buried loved ones, and trampled by destruction. Most homes made of wood, mud, and stone lay in ruins. In some villages, 98% of the buildings have been severely damaged or wiped out. Survivors face not only physical but emotional devastation, loss of shelter, security, and loved ones.

Voices from the Ground

Beyond the statistics, the direct accounts from survivors reveal a harrowing reality of fear and isolation. As reported by Reuters, survivors shared what they are enduring: One person described the constant state of fear: "In this mountainous area, tremors have occurred every few minutes since the earthquake and people are very frightened. Most have left their homes and are sitting out in the open. It's a very painful situation." Another from a remote village explained the feeling of being cut off from help: " The earthquake started around 11:45 at night with one shake. Everything was destroyed... so far, no assistance has reached us. There are 4 or 5 villages and the road is completely blocked. Some of the wounded have been taken out, but many remain. We have around 160 people killed and between 180 to 190 injured."

Challenges Facing Relief Efforts

Access and Terrain: Treacherous roads, aftershocks, and overwhelming relief needs delay rescue and aid.

Aid Shortages: Vital supplies, including shelters, food, water, medicine, and medical teams, remain desperately lacking."

A Region of Recurring Hardship

Afghanistan is prone to frequent earthquakes due to its location at the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. This was the deadliest earthquake in the country since a magnitude 6.3 quake killed thousands in western Herat province in 2023, reopening deep wounds of loss for a nation that has demonstrated immense resilience in the face of repeated hardship.

Our Pledge | Standing with Afghanistan

Our hearts are with the people of Afghanistan during this painful time. We deeply share the sorrow of families who have lost their loved ones and homes, and our prayers remain with every survivor facing fear and hardship. Even in this tragedy, we believe in hope. Your sorrow is our sorrow, your pain is our pain, and you are in our most sincere and heartfelt prayers during this time of immense trial. May those who perished rest in peace, and may the survivors find strength, healing, and comfort. We stand by you, today and always.
