The eighth month of the Islamic calendar, Shaban draws us closer to Ramadan, the most important month for Muslims worldwide. Depending on the moon observation, Shaban will start on January 20th 2026 and finish on February 17, 2026.
Among Muslims, the month of Shaban is important because it comes between the months of Rajab and Ramadan. Emphasizing the month of Shaban, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said,
“That is a month to which people do not pay much attention, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are taken up to the Lord of the Worlds, and I like that my deeds be taken up when I am fasting.”
(Nasai 2357)
It is also called the “Month of the Prophet Muhammad” (PBUH). The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) fasted a lot during this month. He spent most of his time praying and fasting. Among the most well-known hadiths concerning Shaban, one claims that,
The first month of the Islamic year is a time to reflect, remember, and make charity donations Aisha (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) did not fast in any month more than he did in Shaban. He used to fast all of Shaban, except for a little.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
Shaban is a perfect opportunity to start using the kindness Ramadan advises. Following the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH), who gave most throughout Ramadan, is best done by giving in Shaban.
Sunnah fasting (voluntary fasting) during Shaban: It is part of the Sunnah to fast during Shaban, and doing so is highly honoured because the Prophet (PBUH) did it. Though it is advised to fast voluntarily, especially on Mondays and Thursdays, it is not necessary for the whole month.
Creating a Prayer Routine and Dhikar: If someone has trouble praying regularly, Shaban is a great time to make a strong prayer routine before Ramadan starts.
Reading the Quran more often: Many Muslims have trouble finishing the Quran during Ramadan because they are not ready. The month of Shaban can be used to develop a reading habit and strengthen your relationship with the holy Quran.
Cleansing the Hearts: Think about what you have done, ask Allah for forgiveness, and make a deliberate effort to become a better person. Sincere repentance and seeking forgiveness during Shaban help purify the heart, making it more open to the blessings of Ramadan.
Giving Charity: Helping someone in need is one of the best methods to gain rewards in Shaban. Giving, whether through Sadaqah-e-Jariyah or Zakat, provides countless blessings and rewards in this life and the hereafter.
Support Ramadan 2026 Projects: Shaban is the perfect time to begin your helping hand to Ramadan projects, ensuring that needy people receive support from the first day of fasting.
